History
WVSC is a four-year, state supported, coed college founded in 1891 as West Virginia Colored Institute. WVSC was created after the Second Morrill Act of 1890 stipulated that all land grant institutions could no longer receive federal funds unless provisions were made for the education of black youths. West Virginia University, the state’s land grant school, had been in existence for more than two decades for the education of white students. To assure continued federal funds for West Virginia University, the West Virginia Legislature created another school for blacks, which is now WVSC.
In 1891, the institution was named West Virginia Colored Institute. The following year a teacher-training curriculum was added, which today remains an important part of the school’s tradition. In 1915, the name was changed to West Virginia Collegiate Institute to reflect the increase in programs. The first college degrees were awarded in 1919. The school adopted its present name, West Virginia State College, in 1929. Because of the leadership of the administration and staff, the College was nationally recognized as one of the top institutions in the education of black students.
After the 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education stated that segregated schools were unconstitutional, enrollment increased and became racially integrated. The College became a model for successful integration and was nationally known as a “living laboratory for human relations.” West Virginia State College’s mission is to serve the educational, cultural, and social needs of its students. The College seeks to prepare students to both earn a living and recognize and appreciate a diverse cultural, social, and ethnic society.
In 1978, a community college division was established that offers a variety of associate degrees. West Virginia State College’s Reserved Officer Training Corps (ROTC) has been cited as having produced more generals than any other ROTC department of a historically black college.
Situated on 85 acres, the twenty-four-building campus includes an art gallery, music studios, and two theaters. Additional facilities include 16 faculty and staff homes. The educational network uplinks credit courses for the University System and West Virginia’s college and community college systems. West Virginia State College is the largest institution of higher learning in the Kanawha Valley. This traditionally black college presently has a predominantly white student population.
