History
Winston-Salem State University is a four-year, state-supported, coed, liberal arts institution founded in 1892 as the Slater Industrial Academy. It was originally housed in a one-room building and had 25 students. Recognized by the state of North Carolina in 1895, it received a charter as the Slater Industrial and State Normal School in 1897.
The school’s leadership in high-quality training of elementary school teachers was rewarded by the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1925 with a new charter and the authority to confer degrees, making it the first black institution in the United States to grant elementary education degrees. A name change to Winston-Salem Teachers College took place at this time.
The Nursing School was added in 1953, and the college was authorized to grant the Bachelor of Science degree. A charter revision in 1957 expanded the curriculum to include secondary education, and, in 1963, the name was changed to Winston-Salem State College. Legislative action in 1969 changed the name to Winston-Salem State University. The higher education reorganization in North Carolina in 1971 effected a change in school governance. Winston-Salem State University became one of the sixteen member institutions of the University of North Carolina on July 1, 1972, and is now subject to the control of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.
